The roof rat, also called the black rat, is the rat most Sunshine Coast homes hear at night. It is a nimble climber that travels along fences, power lines, palm fronds and tree branches to reach the roof, then slips in through gaps at the eaves or under tiles. Insulation and stored boxes give it a warm, quiet place to nest and raise young.
The usual sign is running or scratching above the ceiling soon after dark and again before dawn. You may also find droppings along the tops of walls in the garage, dark greasy rub marks on beams and chewed cables or insulation. Many people first notice them in autumn as the nights start to cool.
